Reimagine America
In order to Rebuild America we need to revisit some of its underlying assumptions and adapt them for the modern world in order to create clarity and agreement about what the assumptions are going forward. The founding of the country was both revolutionary for its time while also embodying many of the problems and constraints that surrounded that era, not the least of which was slavery, the omission of women from any roles other than the ones dictated for them, and the continual appropriation of Native American’s lands.
That process begins with a seemingly simple change but one that sets the course for all subsequent ones and that is restatement of the Declaration of Independence, to whit, the substitution of “humans” for “men” at the beginning of the second paragraph. This simple act will make unmistakably clear the purpose of the document is to confer rights on ALL people. It’s also worthwhile to revisit the document to understand WHY the Founders decided to revolt and leave the relative safety and economic certainty of the British Empire and found a fledgling nation on a relatively unknown continent. We do this in order to understand the faults we are looking to correct and why we are correcting them.
